What you need to know about Lake LBJ.

Lake LBJ (short for Lyndon B. Johnson) is 1 of 6 reservoirs on the Colorado River about 45 miles northwest of Austin. These 6 reservoirs, also known as The Highland Lakes, include Lake LBJ, Inks Lake, Lake Marble Falls, Lake Travis, Lake Buchanan, & Lake Austin. Each lake is separated by a damn. The damns help to regulate flood control and are used to create recreational opportunities and hydroelectric power.

Lake LBJ has been known as a constant level lake for years, but after recent years, we have reclassified it as a pass through lake. Under normal circumstances Lake LBJ water levels do not vary much because whatever comes in up stream is simultaneously released down stream. This is because of the Thomas J. Ferguson power plant run by LCRA on Lake LBJ. The lake keeps the power plant cool. It is important for the water level not to fluctuate too much or else the power plant could either overheat (if water levels are too low) or flood (if water levels are too high). While very drastic weather can put a wrench in the attempt to keep water levels constant, it is not nearly as likely or common as with typical lakes. This is also very beneficial to property owners and investors in the area. It is safe, but also lucrative for those wishing to invest, and it is a consistent place to enjoy recreational activities as well. Lake LBJ, in general, has the most constant water levels of all of the Highland Lakes.

Surrounding towns include Marble Falls, Granite Shoals, Kingsland, Horseshoe Bay, Highland Haven, and Sunrise Beach. This provides many restaurants, shopping, hotels/resorts, events, campgrounds, and other forms of entertainment which is highly desirable to visitors and property owners. It is also only a short drive to Austin from this little Hill Country Haven.
